The chemical treatment of wastewater refers to the method that changes the chemical or physical properties of pollutants in wastewater by chemical reaction, making it change from dissolved, colloidal or suspended state to sedimentation or floating state, or from solid state to gas state, and then remove from water. Chemical treatment of wastewater can be divided into: neutralization, coagulation, chemical precipitation, oxidation and extraction. Because many kinds of chemical treatment chemicals and equipment with wide application come out one after another, and the price is gradually reduced. Therefore, the application of chemical treatment method in wastewater treatment is increasingly extensive, and now it is gradually keeping pace with biological treatment method.

Chemical treatment can also be used as the three-stage treatment measures after biological treatment, such as point chlorination or alkalization stripping method to remove ammonia nitrogen, chemical precipitation method to remove phosphorus, ozone, chlorine dioxide, potassium permanganate and other oxidation methods to remove difficult to biodegrade organic pollutants.
